For me neurochemistry is superior philosophy, and drugs are the key to paradise

Why are drugs the key to eternal bliss? Because ultimately, we all are just biochemistry.

More specifically, all our mental facilities, of which some of our contemporaries are so proud, are just a stew of self-organizing molecules. There is no mind, no knowlege, no conciousness, and no thinking that wouldn't be just a function of biochemistry.

Nowadays, many people believe our brains are electrocircuitry. They think our identities are memories stored electrically like what happens in a computer. That's why these people believe that one day, we could download our brains onto a harddisk.

These people are fundamentally and ridiculously wrong.

To start with, neurons (nerve cells) are actually not connected to each other. They always end at synapses, and the synapses are chemistry, not electricity.

Why do neurons have axons, those long spins on which electricity travels? It has to be so because the mature human brain has about 100 billion cells, and the distances that signals have to travel are occasionally wide. Electricity has the great advantage that it tavels fast. On the contrary, chemical signalling has to be by diffusion, and compared to electric signal transmission, this is slow.

The human brain is NOT an electrical system. It's a biochemical stew. And only a tiny portion of signal transmission is actually electrical. The brain is NOT a computer. Such an idea is brainless.

People with no idea how the brain works tend to believe that it's all a big circuitry accumulation, like a computer chips, just a bit wetter. That's wrong.

Brain cells don't connect to each others like electrical transmission cables. Brain cells connect to other brain cells at synapses. Nerve cell ends in a biochemical puddles. The puddles (synapses) are what connects them.

Whether we are happy or sad, motivated or depressed, full of love or full of anger isn't primarily a matter of electrical wiring and electric currents, it's primarily a matter of the chemical composition of those synaptic puddles.

And that is why I refer to neuropharmacology as chemical engineering. That's were science becomes technology.

In a probably rather distant future, life for most people will be a matter of swallowing a certain pill every day, and then there is never-ending indescribable bliss.

But now? Here we are in the paleolithics of brain engineering. Our tools are crude, and our knowledge is as fussy as mysticism.

The street drugs, most of them, can only give us temporary glimpses of paradise, and their effects on brain and body physiology are mostly desasterous.

But we all have some other knowledge of paradise that is not normally drug-mediated. We know sexual desire and orgasm. These two aspects of life, of course, are also biochemistry. But they are biochemistry in harmony with physiology and health.

So, in my opinion, at our current rudimentary understanding of the brain, this must be our starting point.

If we want to engineer happiness and bliss, we must improve our sexual desire and our orgasms.

Not many options here. Opiates feel good but are antisexual, cocaine and amphetamines can put desire into overdrive but preempt orgasmic satisfaction and relaxation. But still, cocaine and amphetamine are nearer to the most promising path we can take, which is the enhancement of dopamine.

There are dopaminergic drugs that take a cooler approach than cocaine and amphetamines: medications that are used in Parkinson’s disease, for example, or to lower the hormone prolactin in prolactin-releasing cancers. But many of these medicines cause miserable side effects. In the short term, the most common side effect is nausea. And the most fearful longterm side effect is pleural thickening, gradually destroying the capability to breath and making the connection to an artificial lung a necessity.

In my opinion, the best option we have now is testosterone and dopamine enhancing herbals, of which there are two, butea superba and tongkat ali.

Both are known as testosterone boosters rather than dopamine boosters. But actually, testosterone and dopamine go hand in hand, with anything that elevates testosterone also elevating dopamine.

But the connection isn't linear. My own observation is that for a comparable dosage, tongkat ali is more physical, and butea superba more mental.

This means that anybody who desires elevated testosterone for bodybuilding should go for tongkat ali. But those who want elevated testosterone for improved libido and orgasm will be better off with butea superba.
